Where the word "daughter" came from.

IT'S A GIRL!!!!

I've had a Dad revelation.

The word, "daughter" has clear roots in the following story.

A man's wife was giving birth. It was the old days when husbands were not allowed in with their wives when they gave birth, and he was on tenderhooks. When he heard the baby cry, he called out, "Is it a boy or girl?", and the doctor called back, "A girl".

The man was so excited, he jumped up and ran to the neighbours, knocked on the door and shouted, "It's a girl!" Then he rushed to the next house, knocked on the door and shouted, "It's a girl!"

He kept on going like this right down the street and back again.

Hence, from then on when anyone asked after a baby's gender, if it was a girl, people would say, "It's a door-ta-door-ta-door-ta", which, of course, was eventually shortened to "daughter".

So simple.

Once upon a time there was a princess called Gloria. Gloria was a lovely girl who was dearly loved by everyone, especially her father and mother, the King and Queen.

One day, Princess Gloria fell ill. The doctors were called and they came to treat her. After a number of whispered conversations among themselves, the doctors went to talk to the King and Queen.

“Your Majesties,” they said, “Princess Gloria is gravely ill. We are not able to do anything for her and it is very likely that she will die.”

“No!!!” shouted the King, and the Queen gasped with horror.

“There is one thing that might save the princess,” the doctor’s continued. “There is a flower growing in the forest of Ooga Booga. If someone fetched that flower and brought it back here, we could mix it into a medicine that we believe would make Princess Gloria completely well.”
