Back before Facebook when blogs were the self-expression of choice, a lady called Diane asked an interesting question on her blog, Crossroads (now defunct).

Are a lack of social skills in churches hindering outreach?

Initially I wondered whether she was being a little snobby...

What is it about leaving the light on for kids at bedtime? It’s all right to turn off the light in the bedroom, but the hall light needs to stay on. At least, for many children that’s how it is. It was for me when I was young(er).

Is it the fact that the hall light allows them to see what’s going on in the bedroom? Is it a case of not wanting to be abandoned in a darkened room where there’s no evidence that there is anyone else in the world? Is it a concern to know where to go if they need help?

Whatever the reason (or reasons) for any particular child, the light in the hall is a comfort at bedtime.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. (NIV)

A few years ago, I was walking along the street and I saw a man walking further ahead on the other side of the road. For some reason it occurred to me that God wanted me to talk to him about Jesus. Of course, the idea was ridiculous, but just in case…

“Alright,” I said to God, “I will talk to that guy if he crosses the street to this side of the road.”

A minute or so later, he crossed to my side of the road.

“Come on,” I said, “that doesn’t mean anything. The Shopping Centre is on this side of the road. He’s just going there. Lord, if you want me to talk to this guy, he needs to cross back over the road and go to the Library.”

Shortly after I said that, he crossed the road again and went into the Library.

My heart was pounding.

"Up popped the lesson" - (just something I'd like to share).

KidsStudyBible

Most nights I read a chapter (or section) from Kylie's NIrV Kid's Study Bible to our children and ask questions or discuss the bizzare or shocking parts we come across. At the moment we're moving between Judges and the Sermon on the Mount (in no particular pattern) and, if you're familiar with the book of Judges, you'll understand when I say the stories in Judges require a little bit of explanation.

Well, last night we were up to Judges 17 (I'm still wondering whether we'll attempt chapters 18 onward) and it turned out to be quite an interesting chapter.

When I was at University, I took a class on Christian Missions. The lecturers were definitely on the Liberal side (meaning, they did not take the Bible as the inerrant Word of God) and one of the first things they brought up in the class was the purpose of Missions.

“God would not send people to hell for not believing in Jesus,” intoned our lecturer. This didn’t surprise me. I knew the nature of the class before I entered it. What did surprise me was that only three people out of about 12 in the class (many who were training to enter the ministry) believed that we needed to tell people about Jesus to save them from an eternity in hell.

Andsomeevangelists

Roger Carswell draws 7 truths from Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 in the last chapter of his book, "And Some Evangelists" about sowing the gospel in order to reap.

They're good because they are so commonsense.
