In response to a question sent from a friend a while ago, I typed out a quick response.
"Well, I’ll contribute what I can, but while I’m guessing I’ve been exposed to more of the charismatic wing of the Church than you, I have never spoken in tongues in a meeting and had an interpretation, either. In fact, I can only remember one specific occasion where I even heard it as it happened in an AOG Church I was visiting (though the Baptist Church I attended also experienced prophecies and such and I wouldn’t be surprised if there were messages in tongues that I can’t actually remember).
And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours….”
I have a friend who believes that, because of verses like this in the Bible:
if you get sick, you don’t have enough faith
if you get frail as you get older, you don’t have enough faith
And I haven’t talked to him about this, but I’m pretty sure he’d say…
if you are financially in trouble, you don’t have enough faith either.
Basically, if anything goes wrong in your life, it can be fixed with a word of prayer and FAITH.
And while I don’t agree with everything he says, he’s right at least in this respect: This passage we are looking at begins with “Have faith in God” and we don’t.
We don't have enough faith.
